For almost seven years, a SMART ride to Larkspur plus a Golden Gate Ferry crossing into San Francisco cost the same $10 one way, whether you boarded at Sonoma County Airport or Petaluma Downtown. That stops soon. Golden Gate's rider alert says October 31, 2026 is the last day to buy a Sail & Rail ticket, and November 30, 2026 is the last day to use one.
The flat fare hid SMART's zone system. Starting in December, the station you board at decides what the trip costs again. Riders from northern Sonoma County will notice it the most. Riders in Petaluma, Cotati and Rohnert Park will barely notice. And for everyone, how you pay matters more than where you board.
SMART's board approved the combo ticket as a pilot effective January 1, 2020. The original proposal cited ridership growth and affordable travel between counties. SMART's fares page still describes it as a pilot meant to let both agencies decide whether it should become permanent.
SMART's August 19, 2026 General Manager's Report gives the reason more plainly. It says the pass is being phased out "at the request of Golden Gate."
Ridership isn't the reason. The same report counted 163,276 SMART riders in July 2026. That was the fourth straight all-time monthly record and 23% more than in July 2025. In April, the regional MASCOTS service change added 19% more SMART service and raised weekend service to 24 daily trips. So the train is running more often and carrying more people. Only the bundled ticket is going away.
Neither agency has announced a replacement combo. SMART's fares page directs riders to its other fare products, including the weekend day pass. As the next sections show, that pass is a poor match for a ferry trip.
After November 30, the trip is priced as two separate fares, with a discount applied at the transfer. An adult paying with Clipper pays $1.50 for each SMART zone traveled. The adult Clipper fare on the Larkspur ferry has been $9.50 since July 1, 2026. Golden Gate's interagency transfer page says a rider coming from another agency gets up to $2.85 off. That brings the ferry portion down to $6.65.
SMART's own report gives the endpoints: an adult SMART-to-ferry trip costs $8.15 for one zone and $14.15 for five. The table below fills in the Sonoma County stations between those two figures. Zone assignments come from the zone map on SMART's fares page, with Larkspur in Zone 5.
| Boarding station | Zones to Larkspur | SMART fare | Ferry after credit | One-way total | Compared with $10 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sonoma County Airport, Windsor | 5 | $7.50 | $6.65 | $14.15 | $4.15 more |
| Santa Rosa North, Santa Rosa Downtown | 4 | $6.00 | $6.65 | $12.65 | $2.65 more |
| Rohnert Park, Cotati, Petaluma North, Petaluma Downtown | 3 | $4.50 | $6.65 | $11.15 | $1.15 more |
Over a round trip, the gaps double. A Windsor rider who paid $20 to get to the city and back under Sail & Rail will pay $28.30 with Clipper. From Santa Rosa Downtown it's $25.30. From Petaluma Downtown it's $22.30.
The flat fare favored whoever rode the farthest. A Windsor rider saved more than a Petaluma rider every time because both paid the same price for very different distances. From December on, the price follows the distance.
The transfer credit drives everything in the table, and it only applies to certain payment methods. Golden Gate says interagency transfers are issued automatically to Clipper users, on mobile or plastic, and to contactless bank card users. Cash fares get no transfer. Golden Gate's SMART connection page is more specific: no transfer credit applies when you ride on a SMART eTicket.
That's where the $10 Weekend Day Pass catches people. It gives unlimited SMART rides on a Saturday or Sunday, but it's sold only in the SMART e-Tickets app. It doesn't cover the ferry, and it doesn't earn the credit. Add a full $9.50 ferry fare each way, and a weekend round trip on the pass costs $29. That's more than the Clipper round trip from any station in the table, including Sonoma County Airport. The pass works well for a day of hopping between Sonoma and Marin stations, and it's the expensive choice for a trip that ends at the Ferry Building.
Here's how a Clipper-paid trip earns the full discount:
You may see a different credit amount online. Golden Gate's older SMART page still lists a $1.50 adult credit from SMART to the ferry. The agency's interagency transfer page and Clipper's Golden Gate Ferry page both say up to $2.85. SMART's $8.15-to-$14.15 range only works out with the $2.85 figure. The larger credit comes from the regional no-cost and reduced-cost transfer pilot that MTC rolled out with next-generation Clipper starting in December 2025. The agreement behind that pilot runs through June 30, 2027. No one has announced what happens after that date.
For some riders, the end of Sail & Rail changes very little. Riders 18 and under and riders 65 and older ride SMART fare-free, with no ticket needed. On the Larkspur ferry, Golden Gate charges $7 for riders ages 5 to 18 and for seniors, and children 4 and under ride free, up to two per full-fare adult. Since the train portion costs nothing, the ferry fare is their whole trip. That's already below the old $10 combo, no matter where they board.
Clipper START, the regional program for eligible low-income adults, cuts SMART single rides in half and brings the Larkspur ferry fare to $4.75. Riders with a disability or on Medicare pay $0.75 per SMART zone.
The weekend ferry schedule controls the day more than the train does. On weekends and holidays, the Golden Gate schedule card effective April 13, 2026 lists these Larkspur departures to San Francisco:
The 10:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. boats are 90 minutes apart, and so are the 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. boats. If your train arrives just after a ferry leaves, the trip can stretch by an hour or more.
Golden Gate puts the walk from the SMART Larkspur station to the ferry terminal at about 15 minutes. The agency also posts a map of the preferred walking route. SMART runs the SMART Connect shuttle as an alternative to the pedestrian and bicycle bridge. It meets southbound trains and northbound ferries, but SMART warns riders not to count on it for tight transfers.
Game days have one more catch. Sail & Rail never covered the Giants Ferry. SMART notes that the regular Larkspur ferry lands at the San Francisco Ferry Building, about a 25-minute, 1.2-mile walk from Oracle Park, or a 15-minute Muni ride. If you still have a Sail & Rail ticket in the "Train + Ferry" section of the SMART app, it works on regular ferry and SMART trips through November 30. Small fare changes like this one shape how a part of the county works day to day.
